Join Rising Tide

We welcome new members. If you are interested in joining the Chorus, you no doubt have some questions about the process and what you can expect.  Here are the answers to Frequently Asked Questions:
Do I have to audition?  No
Do I need to be able to read music? No. Many of our members do not read music but a good ear is very helpful, especially if you have no experience in singing four-part, a cappella music.  We provide learning tracks for each part and our Education Director, James Chappell, is a master at creating very helpful videos and tools to assist in our learning journey. Members have full access to all the resources.
Do members have to memorize performance songs? Yes. Rising Tide performs without music or instrumental accompaniment. Members are expected to spend time outside of regular rehearsals to learn lyrics and notes to all music within a reasonable period, allowing rehearsal time to optimize or “polish” and “refine” our arrangements. Our directors let us know when we need to know the music “by heart”, generally within 3-4 weeks after a song is introduced.
What level of commitment is expected of members? While acknowledging that “life happens”, we encourage members to attend all rehearsals.  Attendance is recorded to promote a sufficient level of participation.  We find that regular attendance enables members to perform in a more relaxed and confident manner with the added benefit of growing strong friendships and camaraderie with fellow songsters.
How often does the Chorus perform?  We generally perform several times during the year in a variety of formats which may include joint concerts with other choruses, community sing-outs at senior residences, charity events, and full-blown shows.
Where and when do rehearsals take place?  Rehearsals take place from 1:30-4:30pm, most Sundays throughout the year at St. Philip by-the-Sea Anglican Church in Lantzville, just north of Nanaimo.
What is the cost to join? Annual dues are $75.
How do I join?  Be our guest for three consecutive rehearsals while you decide if Rising Tide is the right fit for you. We will assign a “buddy” to act as your guide and support and we will provide you with a Guest Book with our current repertoire so you can sing along. Then, if you like what you see and hear, are ready to commit and would like to officially join we will welcome you with open arms!
